What’s Geopark?
Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Their bottom-up approach of combining conservation with sustainable development while involving local communities is becoming increasingly popular(citation from UNESCO website). We have 43 Geoparks in Japan. We can understand the connection between the Earth activity, ecosystem, and human activities including history and culture Through traveling geopark area.
Characteristics of the Mishima Village Kikai Caldera Geopark
The Mishima Village Kikai Caldera Geopark is a unique and compact geopark. “KIkai Caldera”, the evidence of the largest volcanic eruption in this 10,000 years, Is the most important characteristics of the geopark. The active volcano “Iwodake” and surrounding sea area colored by hydrothermal water are also impressive. The smallest population (less than 400) is also unique characteristics of the geopark.

Orange-Coloured sea of the Nagashima-bay
The most impressive scenery of the Mishima Village Kikai Caldera Geopark is Orange-coloured sea of the Nagahama Bay. The orange colour of the Seawater caused by iron hydroxide derived from hydrothermal Water discharging from the seafloor of the wharf.Tide and wind Cause an ever-changing texture of the colored water. The scenery reminds us that the Earth is active.

How a caldera is formed
1
Huge amount of magma are erupted and the ceiling of the magma chamber collapsed

2
Fallen rocks push the magma out of the chamber

3
Huge depression is formed to be a caldera

About Kikai Caldera
The Secret of “Akahoya” Volcanic Ash
The Kikai Caldera is the main feature of the Mishima Village Kikai Caldera Geopark.

The caldera is a large depression formed by repeated massive volcanic eruptions. The depression is 15-25 km in diameter, with its northern rim edged with Takeshima and Iwojima. Most part of the caldera is submerged which keeps it from subaerial erosion, hence its original topography is well preserved since the caldera formation.

Large volcanic eruption started about 580,000 years ago.

The latest caldera eruption was 7,300 years ago, which is the largest one in Japan in last 10,000 years. The pyroclastic flow from the caldera had tremendous impact on southern Kyushu, killing most of ancient people in the area. Also, ash fall from the caldera covers most part of Japanese islands, about 10 cm of thickness in central part of Japan. The volcanic ash is called as “Akahoya volcanic ash”, due to its bright brown color.

Thanks to its bright color, widespread distribution all over Japanese islands, and well-defined age of Akahoya volcanic ash, it is used as a key bed to correlate ages in distant heritages.

Thus, the volcanic eruption of the Kikai Caldera is important not only for Japanese geology, but also anthropology.

Please enjoy Mishima village Kikai Caldera Geopark, a living museum.
